When and how often does SaRA text my patients?

Timing and frequency of SaRA's automated messages, and how patients can opt out or re-enroll.

Written by Valeed Malik

How the automated messages work

  • Once a patient is enrolled, they receive automated check-in texts on the cadence chosen at enrollment — Mon–Fri is the default, and Mon/Wed/Thu, Tue/Thu, or every day (Mon–Sun) are also available. The process is 100% automated — you do not need to do anything for the messages to go out.

  • Timing: if a send time is set for the patient (or your clinic has a default send time), the message goes out at that time in the patient's own time zone. If no send time is set, it goes out at a random time between 10am and 3pm Central.

  • The content of the questions depends on the patient type (message flow) selected at enrollment.

Does SaRA respond to patients on my behalf?

No. SaRA never replies directly to a patient. Certain longer replies ("non-standard" messages) are brought to the primary provider's attention, but the decision to respond always stays with your team.

Can a patient opt out?

Yes — replying STOP unsubscribes the patient, but it also blocks your replies until they text START, so deactivating the patient in SaRA is almost always the better way to end messages. The full comparison, and how deactivation works, is in Discharging a patient and stopping their automated messages.

Want different questions for your patients?

SaRA has multiple message flows and builds more regularly. If the messages don't feel relevant for a patient, change their patient type (the patient stays enrolled and the questions switch from the next message) or message us through the in-app chat and we'll help you find the most appropriate flow.
